It combines a 3.3-liter V6 engine with a 318-hp electric motor.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">When properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 lbs. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The Explorer rides on an all-new rear-wheel drive platform, but all-wheel drive is still optional. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Ride and handling are acceptable and included but far from entertaining; <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The Explorer ST is sportier, and its extra power and stiffer suspension make it a true performance SUV.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">fuel economy<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">With a myriad of powertrains and drivetrains, the 2021 Explorer has varying EPA fuel economy ratings. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The rear-wheel drive hybrid model was rated the most economical overall, with ratings of 27 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Adding all-wheel drive lowers the hybrid&#8217;s ratings by 3 and 4 mpg, respectively. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">We tested one on our 200 mile highway,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">It only managed 24 mpg. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">By comparison, the 400-horsepower Explorer ST got 25 mpg in our tests, which beat the EPA rating by 1. We also tested the four-cylinder Explorer with all-wheel drive. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The government estimates the version will gain 20 mpg in the city and 27 highway; <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">We saw 28 mpg.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Ford Explorer cabin <\/span><\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">interior, comfort and cargo<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">While the interior may be uninspiring, the Explorer&#8217;s cabin is functional and comfortable \u2014 at least for those in the first two rows. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Entry into the standard third row is now easier thanks to a new mechanism that moves the second-row seats out of the way at the touch of a button. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">However, once back there, children and older adults will find the seat is too close to the ground to be comfortable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Competitors such as the Chevy Traverse and Volkswagen Atlas offer more third-row comfort. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">We were able to fit four suitcases behind the third row of the Ford, and we installed a total of 31 suitcases with both back rows folded flat.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Information, entertainment and communication<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\">\r\n<li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\">\r\n<figure>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_14878\" <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The system is attractive and responsive but not as intuitive as we would like. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">A rotary controller will help in this regard. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">For the optional 10.1-inch vertically oriented monitor, you&#8217;ll need to upgrade to Platinum or ST. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">However, every model is available with voice-activated navigation as well as a rear-seat entertainment system, but aside from the base Navigator, a 12-speaker B&amp;O audio system is standard.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Safety and driver assistance features<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The 2021 Explorer received a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) but missed a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) simply due to an acceptable score in the small overlap frontal crash test . <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Ford equips every Explorer with a suite of standard driver assistance technologies and offers upgrades such as self-parking assistance. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Key safety features include:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align:
