Having a large coupe or convertible <\/span><\/span>at your disposal is a luxury few people can justify<\/span><\/span><\/a> , but perhaps the four-door version of the BMW 8-Series 2021 8-Series Gran Coupe is practical enough to justify its purchase. <\/span>Compared to the 8-Series Coupe and Convertible ( <\/span><\/span>reviewed separately<\/span><\/span><\/a>), the Gran Coupe offers a more usable rear seat, and with those seats folded flat, the four-door has two-door cargo-carrying capability. <\/span>The base 840i comes with a turbocharged, silky-smooth, rear-wheel drive hex; <\/span>All-wheel drive xDrive models are also available. <\/span>Peak performance with the M850i, which houses a 523-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 under the hood; <\/span>Unfortunately, this model also comes with a six-figure price tag. <\/span>Whichever you choose, the 8-series Gran Coupe is a stylish, luxury touring car with the added flexibility to help validate expenses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The 8-Series Gran Coupe sees few changes for 2021, but SiriusXM satellite radio, lane departure warning, and dark gray headlining are all standard equipment now. <\/span>Sonic Speed \u200b\u200bBlue is no longer available as an exterior color, and you can no longer order the black Merino leather with the matching black piping. <\/span>BMW has also removed the cool Night Vision feature from the options menu.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It’s hard not to crave more than the 523 horsepower<\/span><\/span><\/a> and roaring soundtrack that the V-8-powered M850i \u200b\u200bprovides, except for the fact that those attributes require you to drop an extra $21,000. <\/span>That’s the difference between the M850i \u200b\u200band the 840i’s six-cylinder all-wheel drive. <\/span>We recommend the latter, which still has more than enough power to move after rushing. <\/span>We also choose the M Sport Package which adds a more aggressive body kit and black exterior trim, as well as an M-specific steering wheel and other interior upgrades. <\/span>Our other favorite additions include a set of 20-inch wheels on high-performance airless tires for maximum cornering ability and a Comfort Seating package. <\/span>Includes additional front seat adjustments, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seat cushions, and electric rear seat sunshades.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A <\/span><\/span>smooth eight-speed automatic transmission<\/span><\/span><\/a> and a pair of velvet motors highlight the 8-series Gran Coupe. <\/span>The 840i features a 335-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that feeds either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. <\/span>The M850i \u200b\u200bfeatures a 523-hp, 4.4-liter V-8 twin-turbo engine and standard all-wheel drive. <\/span>Although the base engine doesn’t pack the wall that a V-8 does,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, it is still fast and makes a nice sound when on the go. <\/span>Those looking for more substantial thrust won’t be disappointed with the M850i, which has a detuned version of the engine in the BMW M8 Gran Coupe (reviewed separately) that makes up to 617 horsepower. <\/span>Both models offer a great ride and playful handling responses. <\/span>While the steering offers little feedback when the road turns crooked, the large beam of light makes up for with strong brakes and the refinement of the aforementioned powertrain.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

BMW 2021 fuel economy<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the 840i’s rear-wheel drive will gain 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. <\/span>Adding all-wheel drive to the mix drops those numbers to 20 mpg city and 27 mpg city, respectively. <\/span>The high-powered M850i \u200b\u200bis all-wheel drive only and is expected to get 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. <\/span>We tested all three configurations on the 200-mile fuel economy route for real-world mpg ratings. <\/span>The 840i’s rear-wheel drive returned an impressive 34 mpg highway, the 840i’s all-wheel drive got 30 mpg, and the M850i \u200b\u200bgot 28 mpg.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Like the 8-Series coupe and convertible, the Gran Coupe’s interior is lavishly equipped – albeit with a sober design. <\/span>All models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, customizable ambient lighting, a large display, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging. <\/span>The cabin could be further enhanced with intimidating overhead lines, a glass key fob, and multifunctional seating with increased adjustability. <\/span>The driving position is very comfortable thanks to the well-placed dead pedal. <\/span>front view is excellent,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

But the rear view through the steep fastback windshield is restricted. <\/span>Legroom is more generous in the back seat of the Gran Coupe than in its two-door counterparts, but thanks to the car’s sharply angled roofline, headroom is even narrower. <\/span>The 8-series four-door is more practical than its coupe sister. <\/span>We were able to fit up to 15 carry-on bags inside with her back seat stowed for a total of 11 bags in the coupe. <\/span>Both models had five bags in their trunks, while the convertible model kept four bags less.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The 10.3-inch touchscreen is the cornerstone of the Gran Coupe’s 8-series iDrive infotainment system, which is mounted atop the dashboard and powered through myriad functions. <\/span>In addition to tactile inputs and the ergonomic rotating knob in the center console, the system responds to a combination of voice commands, traditional buttons, and even optional gesture controls. <\/span>Each Gran Coupe features Apple CarPlay, a Harman\/Kardon audio system, several charging ports and subscription-based services such as SiriusXM satellite radio and a Wi-Fi hotspot. <\/span>Android Auto is still notably absent. <\/span>Shoppers can also opt for a great Bowers & Wilkins stereo as long as they’re willing to pay the hefty extra fee.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Class 8 Gran Coupe has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). <\/span>The Bimmer has some standard driver assistance technologies like forward collision warning, automated emergency barking, and lane departure warning, but more advanced equipment costs more. <\/span>Key safety features include:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
