BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2021
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2021
BMW As one of the least expensive ways to join the BMW owners club, the 2021 Gran Coupe 2-series strives to offer a luxury car experience , and has mostly succeeded. The GC challenges other luxury four-door cars such as the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-class. There’s a turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood, but it’s available in two harmony states: 228 hp in the 228i and 301 hp in the M235i. The latter delivers sharp acceleration, but the former is not sag. The two-series Gran Coupe’s ride has been improved, but its handling isn’t as aggressive as we’d expect from a BMW badge. Unlike the 2-Series coupe and convertible, the 4-door Gran Coupe 2-Series comes from a front-wheel drive platform borrowed from BMW’s sister brand, Mini, and it doesn’t seem to hide that fact.
BMW
Like many other 2021 BMW models, the 2-series Gran Coupe receives SiriusXM satellite radio as standard, and Android Auto compatibility is finally on the spec sheet. The once optional 10.3-inch infotainment screens are now standard, and the same goes for the navigation system with real-time traffic updates. In addition, the new Driver Assistance Package offers adaptive cruise control and an automatic parking feature.
Driving enthusiasts will likely crave the hotter M235i, but for the majority of drivers, the base 228i Gran Coupe will surely please. We skipped most options, but adding the Comfort Package — keyless entry, driver-side lumbar support, and a panoramic sunroof — feels like a no-brainer.
Engine, transmission and performance BMW
Both Gran Coupe models come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. One in the 228i produces 228 horsepower, while the M235i produces 301 horsepower. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard in-line. Across town, the 228i feels lively and passionate, and on the test track it delivered a 5.1-second run at 60 mph. But a short test drive of the M235i will get this car off your mind. The M235i makes the entry-level model feel tame, and in our hands, it sped to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. That’s faster than the X2 M35i SUV, which has the same powertrain; It hit 60 in 4.6 seconds during the comparison test.
BMW fuel economy
The EPA rates the 228i xDrive Gran Coupe for 23 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, 27 mpg combined, and in the 200 mpg highway fuel economy loop, it clocked 37 mpg. The more powerful M235i earns roughly the same ratings as the 228i: 23 mpg city, 32 mpg city, and 26 mpg combined. What’s more, in our testing, it achieved 37 mpg as well.
Interior, comfort and cargo BMW
The cabin layout is identical to modern BMW models such as the 3-Series sedan and X3 SUV. It’s simple, driver-focused design features ambient interior lighting that illuminates the instrument panel and door panels. BMW claims rear seat legroom is about the same as the larger 3-Series sedan, but overall the cabin feels comfortable for both front and rear seat occupants. The Gran Coupe’s small two-string cargo area is good enough to run groceries and weekend road trips, and the back row folds down to accommodate larger cargo. We brought five carry-on bags back with the seats up and 14 down.
Information, entertainment and contact BMW
The driver faces a reconfigurable 10.3-inch digital display and a 10.3-inch touchscreen display mounted on the dashboard. The latter is slightly tilted towards the driver for ease of use. Navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio come standard, but a wireless smartphone charging pad and Harman/Kardon stereo system will cost extra. BMW offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for free.
BMW safety and driver assistance features
The 2021 Gran Coupe 2-series has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). BMW Active Driving Assistant, which includes a range of driver assistance features to help reduce the possibility of an accident, comes standard. Key safety features include:
Standard Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
Standard Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
Standard Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keeping Assist
Warranty and maintenance coverage
BMW offers a warranty package to match that of its European competitors, so sweetening the deal with a full three years of free scheduled maintenance. Audi offers only one year of service visits included, Mercedes-Benz offers no visits.
The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
The powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
