BMW 2021

The two-door and four-door BMW distinguishes itself from the 3-Series sedan with a controversial new design and a sleeker roof. Mechanically, the two cars are nearly identical. It is powered by the same two engines: either a 255-hp four-cylinder turbo engine or a 382-hp six-cylinder turbocharged engine. While passenger space is clearly arranged differently within the 4-door Series 4 , occupants are treated to the same basic interior design, layout and features as the four-doors – and as fans of BMW’s latest interior arrangement, we’re okay with that. The new 4 Series takes on other luxury two-door models such as the Audi A5, Lexus RC and Mercedes-Benz C-class. Fans of the high-performance 4-series or M4 fastback Gran Coupe sedan (both reviewed separately) will be pleased to know that these two models will continue to be offered.

We think the six-cylinder turbocharger in the M440i would be the enthusiast’s choice, but the $13,000 price premium may turn some buyers off. That price hike comes with a load of extra equipment, in case you need more reasons to justify the cost. The M440i comes standard with all-wheel drive, for one thing, and it’s also equipped with unique 18-inch M Sport wheels with tireless tires, M sport suspension and rear differential, rear spoiler, faux-leather-wrapped instrument panel, and more. A convertible model is also offered, but switching to the soft-topped chassis style adds nearly $8,000 to the base price.

The same two overdrive engines offered in the 3 Series are available in the 4 Series. Specific 430i models are powered by a 255 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The M440i is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that gains the assistance of a 48-volt hybrid system to make 382 horsepower. The 4 Series delivers a very sporty driving experience, thanks to a retuned suspension, more aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track and lower center of gravity. We tested the M440i Coupe and were less impressed with the driving characteristics of the stunning model six. Aside from powerful brakes that performed well in our test from 70 to zero mph (149 ft), the Bimmer’s rubber steering and matching ride didn’t provide the same satisfaction we got from the M340i sedan.

BMW 2021 fuel economy

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the 430i four-cylinder coupe will gain 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Adding four-wheel drive to the equation drops those numbers to 24 and 33 mpg, respectively. The six-cylinder M440i is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 31 on the highway. We didn’t test any Series 4 on our 75-mph highway for fuel economy, which is part of our comprehensive test regimen.

Interior, comfort and cargo BMW 2021

Shoppers may not notice much difference between the 4 and 3 Series cabins unless they are in the back seat. The dashboard design, interior materials and basic controls look identical to the Series 3’s four-doors, although we did note that the 4 Series’ lower roofline gives it a less spacious feel. Trunk space here is less generous than in the 3-Series, especially in the convertible, which will likely give up some of its cargo space to make stowage for its convertible fabric roof.

The 2021 4 Series comes with the same standard 8.8-inch and optional 10.3-inch infotainment screens as the Series 3 sedan. Both screens are powered by the latest version of BMW’s iDrive 7 infotainment software, which combines an intuitive interface with a console-mounted console for ease of use while driving; Those who prefer to interact with the screen directly can do so because both are touch screens. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and in-dash navigation will be standard, while a 12.3-inch digital display, built-in Wi-Fi and a wireless smartphone charging pad are optional extras.

BMW 2021 safety and driver assistance features

Being all-new, the 2021 Series 4 has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). BMW offers a range of driver assistance features as standard, with more advanced features available as options. Key safety features include:

Standard Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection

Standard Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keeping Assist

Adaptive cruise control is available with semi-autonomous driving mode

Warranty and maintenance coverage

Compared to competitors such as the Cadillac CT5 or Genesis G70, the standard warranty offerings of the BMW 4 Series are fairly basic. BMW makes up for that with a three-year free maintenance plan, while Caddy only offers one free visit.

The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles

The powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles

Free maintenance is covered for three years or 36000 miles
