In recent years, the BMW 7 Series has evolved from sports sedans to luxury luxury , and the 2021 model is following suit. Its soft suspension, quiet cabin, and spoiled luxury features make it an attractive limousine for wealthy buyers, most of whom wouldn’t mind if their driver wasn’t particularly amused by the almost lifeless rudder. A range of powertrain options are offered, from a 320-horsepower inline-six to a twin-turbocharged, fire-breathing V-12. But no matter the mill under the plinth, the Series 7 remains a quiet, assembled cruiser that won’t break a sweat on long road trips and will leave you feeling fresh and relaxed when you reach your destination.

It slightly differentiates the 7 Series models for 2020 and 2021 . Heated front seats, heated front armrests, a heated steering wheel, an integrated dashboard camera, and remote start are all standard features now, but the dashboard-integrated CD player has been discontinued. Heated rear seats are now a standalone option as well.

It may differ between us, but the primary powertrain—a turbocharged inline-six—in the 740i is well suited to this comfort-car nature. It still provides plenty of saliva when you need it, but other than that it’s quiet and smooth so it’s what we recommend. Plus, its low starting price frees up your money to go towards some luxury interior features. We flaunted the Professional Driver Assistance Package – a semi-autonomous driving mode particularly useful in traffic jams – so we could just relax and let the car do some work.

Engine, transmission and performance bmw 7 2021

Engines and transmissions are at the top of the shortlist of highlights here. Each one, from the 740i’s 320-horsepower inline-six turbocharged engine to the insane M760i’s 601-hp twin-turbo V-12, is velvety smooth and feels more powerful than official horsepower numbers suggest. Even the 745e’s plug-in turbocharged six-cylinder engine and electric motor is powerful and capable of driving with a natural feel absent on most hybrids. Each 7 Series shares some variation on the same eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive (xDrive in BMW marketing talk) is optional on the 740i and standard in the rest of the range. No matter what driving modes in the vehicle you choose, the suspension is soft and body control is lacking. The Series 7 has decent cornering grip, but the suspension motions in general—and the light, numb steering in particular—discourage their exploration.

Fuel economy bmw 7 2021

If it weren’t for the 12-cylinder M760i , the 7-Series lineup overall would have an impressive array of EPA fuel economy ratings. Both the 740i and 750i’s six-cylinder engines delivered better-than-average fuel economy on our real-world highway fuel economy test road of 200 miles at 30 and 29 mpg, respectively. The 745e’s hybrid model uses a 12.0 kWh battery pack housed in the trunk and is said to provide up to 16 miles of electric-only driving. The pack can be recharged using 110V, 220V or DC fast charging systems, the latter two of the recommended ways to quickly add juice.

For decades, BMW’s design aesthetic has been serious and business-like. That was okay when her cars were all about the hard work of driving. Lacking that spirit, the latest 7 Series offers riders the bandwidth to notice build quality, materials and design that’s average for this affluent class. Sure, it’s spacious, but so is every limousine in this class. Sure, it’s luxury, but once in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or even a Genesis G90, you’ll be left wanting more of a car starting at $80,000. In volume terms, the BMW trunk has competitors such as the Cadillac CT6 and G90. Its trunk is at least 18 cubic feet larger than the trunks of those sedans, but the fact that it’s packed with real-world-sized carry-on bags reveals a different conclusion. We were only able to fit three of our carry-on bags inside the trunk of our 740i test car, while the others carried twice as many.

infotainment and contact bmw 7 2021

BMW’s iDrive infotainment system has long gone beyond early teething issues to become a direct and attractive interface. The latest version, called iDrive 7.0, can be manipulated via a touch screen or quick and intuitive control in the center console. Each class offers 7 USB ports for front seat passengers and four 12V sockets scattered throughout. Bluetooth is standard, and a Samsung tablet with a base between the rear seats is optional, allowing passengers to remotely access some infotainment features. Apple CarPlay is standard; Oddly enough, Android Auto is not available.

Safety and driver assistance features BMW 7 2021

The 2021 7 Series has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Latest driver assistance features are available or standard on every 7 Series, from blind spot monitoring to semi-autonomous highway cruise control. Key safety features include:

Standard Low-Speed Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection

Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist are available

 Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and maintenance coverage

BMW’s free three-year or 36,000-mile scheduled maintenance plan — which is included with every 7-Series — lags behind some competitors. Jaguar offers five years or 60,000 miles of free maintenance with the purchase of a new XJ sedan, and Lincoln Continental Black Label models come with four years or 50,000 miles of service.

The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles

The powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles

Free maintenance is covered for three years or 36000 miles
