Ford Edge 2021
Ford Edge 2021
With most mid-size SUVs getting big with a three-row layout , the 2021 Ford Edge is among a rare group that prioritizes two-row comfort over maximum people towing . It’s a sharp looking platform tooHowever, it faces stiff competition from the likes of the Chevy Blazer, Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. Most Edge models are powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder, but the ST Sport model gets a 335-hp twin-turbo V6 that could leave most competitors in the dust. The Edge cabin is quiet and comfortable for four adults but is starting to look a bit dated. Fortunately, the 2021 infotainment update introduced a much larger screen and Ford’s latest Sync 4 operating system, and a suite of driver assistance features are also standard, including lane-keep assist and automatic emergency braking.

The entire Edge range receives new wheel designs , and two new gray colors join the palette. All models also have acoustic laminated glass on the front side windows for additional sound suppression in addition to the standard parking sensors. The infotainment system is upgraded to the Sync 4 interface and gains a 12-inch screen. The top-level ST model adds a 6-way power-adjustable passenger seat and a heated steering wheel as standard.
While the ST model’s boosted V-6 power sounds attractive, its price tag is anything but. We’d compromise by going with the SEL mid-range model with a turbocharged four-cylinder. The transition from the SE to the SEL adds plenty of features to secure an increased price, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, digital partial display, nine-speaker stereo system, heated front seats with 6-way power-adjustable passenger seat , LED fog lights, heated exterior mirrors, body-color mirror caps, chrome exterior trim, and roof rails.

The base four-cylinder turbo engine produces 250 horsepower and, despite its casual acceleration, should provide enough power for most customers. If you’re looking for an SUV that can keep up with a Volkswagen Golf GTI from zero to 60 mph — and quite a few other fast cars, too — check the box for the Edge ST, which gets a twin-turbocharged 335-hp 2.7-liter V -6 and all-wheel drive is standard. It’s not as light on its feet as the sporty Mazda CX-9—our benchmark for handling crossovers—but the Edge is reasonably pleasant to drive and provides reassuring stability in corners; Its steering is weighted well, if not particularly communicative, and its ride is comfortable on not so ideal road surfaces.
Ford Edge 2021 fuel economy
The four-cylinder models are rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for up to 29 mpg highway and even the ST Sport model manages to achieve a 26 mpg highway rating. We haven’t tested the four-cylinder engine with the new eight-speed automatic transmission yet, but in the 200-mile highway fuel economy loop, the ST managed 25 mpg, just under 1 mpg.
Interior, comfort and cargo
Spacious enough to seat four adults, the Edge cabin is a comfortable spot for a commute or a road trip. The materials throughout the cabin are well chosen, but the fit of the palette and finish could be better; We noticed some skewed dashboard pieces in our test car. Other than that, the interior is simple and plain, with plenty of space for people and goods. If putting junk in the trunk is important to you, the two-row cross section is a great enabler. With the rear seats folded, the Edge accommodated 29 of our carry-on bags. All of its competitors are closely matched in cargo room, but the Edge’s thoughtful storage compartments and more spacious cabin might seal the deal.
The performance-oriented 2021 Ford Edge and Edge ST are built to excite, adding smart new technologies, including a new standard 12-inch largest screen in the segment, an all-new SYNC® 4A with integrated connected navigation and cloud connectivity with conversational voice recognition, plus to improvements to the interior and exterior design of the edge
Information, entertainment and communication
For 2021, all Edge models come with Ford’s latest Sync 4A interface with a large 12.0-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard and can work through a wireless connection; Ford also provides a Wi-Fi hotspot on all Edge models, but navigation within the dashboard remains an optional feature.
