Mini Cooper JCW 2021
Mini Cooper JCW 2021
Mini Cooper The 2021 John Cooper Works (JCW) Mini Cooper exudes personality thanks to a unique design, fast handling , agile engine and well-appointed cabin. It’s also steeped in history: JCW is a descendant of Cooper Car, the racing car manufacturer that raced the original Mini in the 1960s. In 2008, JCW was acquired by BMW, which also owns the Mini brand. The JCW badge is now used across the Mini lineup to designate go-fast models –
Including the hatchback and convertible reviewed here. These two JCWs receive several significant improvements over the standard model, including a more powerful engine and sportier suspension. If you want a track-ready weapon from a Mini, you should consider the Cooper JCW GP, which has more power, a massive rear spoiler, and a sonic exhaust system. Hyundai Veloster N and Volkswagen Golf GTI, which are more expensive. But if you’re looking for fun behind the wheel, the Mini Cooper JCW is an attractive option.
The John Cooper Works Mini lineup sees only a few changes for 2021, most notably the addition of the JCW GP model. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine puts out 302 horsepower, 74 horsepower more than the standard JCW. The GP model also sits lower and has more aerodynamic elements, with an awkwardly large rear spoiler installed in the rear hatch. The GP also features a higher exhaust system and revised suspension.
Mini Cooper
The regular JCW hardtop can now be ordered with a six-speed manual transmission; The eight-speed automatic transmission is the only transmission available for GP and convertible models. Mini also added a Signature package for 2021, which includes a 6.5-inch infotainment system with navigation and Apple CarPlay.
Not flaunting the exclusive JCW GP — of which only 3000 will be made — is easy when you consider the $12,500 price tag over the standard JCW fixed-top. The JCW hardtop comes with standard features including LED headlights, front fog lights, rain sensing wipers,
Heated and electrically adjustable side mirrors, and a rear spoiler. Being “save clues!” Folks, you can guess which transmission to choose. Moving inside, the cabin comes standard with keyless entry and ignition, microfiber upholstery, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Cooper JCW also has standard driver assistance features including a backup rear camera and automated emergency braking.
Engine, transmission and performance
The Mini Cooper JCW is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter quad with 228 horsepower. In the GP model, that same engine was boosted to 302 horsepower. The convertible’s only transmission and GP JCW is an eight-speed automatic; The hardtop gets the choice between the eight-speed automatic or the six-speed manual transmission, the latter new for 2021. All transmissions send power to the front wheels. In our track test, a hardtop JCW-equipped Cooper automatic made a dash from zero to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds.
But the Hyundai Veloster N did the same in 5.4 seconds, while the Volkswagen GTI automatic managed to do it in 5.8 seconds. For the standard Mini Cooper, JCW offers features like Brembo brakes, a more robust suspension, and an electronic front differential. All of this combines to help deliver a precise treatment that enthusiasts will love. However, this miniature suspension system can make for an uncomfortably choppy ride quality on rough road surfaces.
Mini Cooper fuel economy
EPA fuel economy ratings vary based on the chassis style and transmission you choose. The most fuel-efficient combo is the JCW hardtop with 8-speed automatic, which returns 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Picking the manual on the hardtop drops the numbers to 23 city and 33 mpg highway; The convertible model earns ratings of 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway while the GCW GP places 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. We didn’t test the Mini Cooper JCW on the 200-mile fuel-economy road, but during our time with the hardtop JCW, we noticed 25 mpg in mixed driving.
Interior, comfort and cargo Mini Cooper
The materials used in the cabin of the Cooper JCW are top quality, and the design elements are whimsical and unique. The circular bezel housing the infotainment touch screen sets a cheerful tone. Relative to the other subcompacts, the Mini Cooper JCW doesn’t rank highly when it comes to utility. Legroom in the back seat is tight, and these seats would be too cramped for most adults. In the configuration of the steel roof,
This mini offers 8.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 34 cubic feet with those seats folded. With a competitor like the Chevy Sonic hatchback, you get 19 cubic feet with all the seats in place and 47.7 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. The Cooper JCW Convertible boot offers a cargo capacity of just 5.7 cubic feet.
Information, entertainment and communication
All Mini Cooper JCWs come with a six-speaker AM/FM audio system, plus Bluetooth phone and audio streaming. The list of optional equipment includes Harman/Kardon premium audio, navigation, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and wireless charging for your devices. Unfortunately, Cooper JCW is not available with Android Auto.
