bmw x2 2021If the 2021 BMW X2 looks like a cut-top version of the X1 SUV, it’s because it is – but this small crossover is at odds with the driving dynamics. The standard engine is the same 228- horsepower four-cylinder found in the X1, but the X2’s sharper handling makes it a lot more fun to use on a twisty road. Unlike the X1, BMW offers the X2 with 302 horsepower , which it turns into a fire-breathing performance machine. The X2’s smoother body and faster roofline come with some compromises, though: Interior space is limited here for both people and cargo. But those crossover shoppers who value performance above all else will find the X2 more desirable than its squared-back sibling.

Like the X1, the X2 is receiving some updates for 2021. BMW has added the Edition M Mesh appearance package, which adds a grille, unique wheels, M sport seats and black exterior trim. SiriusXM satellite radio is now standard, but LED fog lights are no longer available. The M35i Sport model receives a new grille design, and the Dynamic Handling package has been discontinued for non-M models.

If you’re buying a sDrive28i front-wheel drive or xDrive28i all-wheel drive model from the X2, you may have made a mistake. The Boxier X1 is cheaper, more practical, and still as fun to drive as either of the two X2 models.

The X2 M35i’s 302-horsepower four-cylinder engine makes this small car even more special than the X1. It turns this crossover into a more focused performance machine. It’s the setup we recommend.

Engine, Transmission & Performance 2021 bmw x2

As mentioned earlier, the X2 shares its standard powertrain with the Boxier X1. It consists of a four-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower, an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. BMW calls this model the sDrive28i; xDrive28i is the $2000 all-wheel drive version. Engine liked:

Keen on spinning speed, silky smooth, and brave a lot. On our test track, the X2 xDrive28i cut 6.4 seconds to 60 mph; That’s 0.1 seconds behind the X1 xDrive28i and the Volvo XC40 T5. The fastest is the Mercedes-Benz GLA250, which managed to reach 60 in 5.8 seconds. BMW tuned the M35i’s high-performance engine to pump out 302 horsepower, and that model shot to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds in our hands.

The X2 has a rough ride, especially with the sport suspension. Bypassing rugged stretches of roads, passengers will feel every imperfection in their seats. The trade-off is a high level of agility on a twisty road. The X2 is fun to take on fast corners and rewards the driver with its predictable nature.

Fuel economy bmw x2 2021

The X2 doesn’t have the highest fuel economy ratings in its class, but it’s still very efficient. Front-wheel drive models gain up to 32 mpg highway, while all-wheel drive X2s are rated up to 31 mpg. In our tests, though, the X2 outdone itself, with a 36-mpg result on the fuel economy route on the 200-mile highway. We only managed 29 mpg in the X1 and XC40 T5.

Interior, comfort and cargo bmw x2 2021

While the X2’s interior isn’t as expressive as its exterior, the cabin is well-appointed and well-built. The driving position is great, and all of the X2’s controls are within easy reach of the driver. Headroom in the back seat is tight, but other than that, passenger comfort should be acceptable for most people. BMW offers several upholstery color options in faux leather and genuine leather. Because of its elegant rear shape, the X2 is not as practical as the X1 box. In our tests, we installed five of our carry-on bags behind the back seat and 15 with the rear seats folded, versus seven and 19 in the X1. The X2’s storage capacity is in line with its supported competitors, and it came close to matching the GLA250 in this test.

The 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation is standard and works on BMW’s intuitive and attractive iDrive software, which can also be controlled by a knob mounted on the center console. An upgrade to the Premium package adds a head-up display. Apple CarPlay capability is standard, but Android Auto isn’t available. A seven-speaker audio system will be good enough for casual listeners, but audiophiles can select the premium Harman/Kardon audio system for a bit more coin.

Safety and driver assistance features bmw x2 2021

The 2021 X2 has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nor was it selected as a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). A basic set of driver assistance features are standard – including automatic emergency braking – but more advanced features cost more. Key safety features include:

Standard Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection

 Standard Lane Departure Warning

 Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and maintenance coverage

When it comes to warranty coverage, X2’s policies are average. BMW offers three full years of free scheduled maintenance – a nice feature that Mercedes doesn’t offer. Drivers who would accrue mileage might be better served by the Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC or Cadillac XT4, all of which offer powertrain protection two years longer than the X2.

The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles

The powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles

Free maintenance is covered for three years or 36000 miles
