BMW x3

The 2021 BMW X3 M appears to have the mild manners of Bruce Banner , but beneath its luxurious front is a twin-turbo engine and impressive Incredible Hulk-like capabilities. Based on the BMW X3 compact crossover, the M Edition – along with the rear-sloping X4 M – is a certified beast with 503 horsepower and faster acceleration than lightweight sports cars like the Porsche 718 Cayman and Toyota Supra. The Competition package complements BMW’s brutal boom with circuit-focused upgrades that make charging more difficult, cornering better and stopping even shorter . A handy rear seat and generous luggage space are a nice reminder of its versatility. Ignore its extremely hard drive and staggering number of drive-mode settings, the 2021 X3 M is an absolutely stunning machine.

For 2021, the X3 M adds new standard features and some new options. Notably, its infotainment system now includes Android Auto, which was conspicuously missing. Likewise, a Wi-Fi hotspot and one-year subscription to SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 360L are standard; Matte wood finish is a new interior option. BMW is also changing the competition’s naming from model to package.

With one model to choose from and a price already starting over $70,000, we want the extra 30 horsepower and improved equipment that comes with the Competition package. It adds a gloss black grille, mirror caps and grilles, a standard sport exhaust system, and 21-inch black wheels (versus 20 seconds on the regular M model). Its interior upgrades include distinctive “M” badging, more bolstered front seats and richer Merino leather. Among the countless options, we also choose the Executive and M Driver packages. The first adds ample luxury such as the head-up display, heated steering wheel, gesture controls, panoramic sunroof, self-parking assist, and wireless smartphone charging. The latter unlocks a higher top speed (177 mph vs. 155) and one day of professional driving lessons.

Engine, transmission and performance bmw x3

This crossover 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder is as smooth as it is powerful. The BMW mill has been massaged by the M Performance division to generate between 473 and 503 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of constant torque. The extra ponies are customized for the Competition model, which also adds a standard sports exhaust system and 21-inch wheels. Every X3 M comes equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system that can send 100 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels when needed. The 2020 X3 M competition we tested was ridiculously fast and amazingly fast for what it is. rips to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds,

It closes the 50-70 mpg gap at the 3.1 mark, and completes the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds at 119 mph. For context, the 2016 M3 competition is much slower than the SUV in first and last measures. The X3 M also stops from 70 mph in the same 146 feet as that sedan and spins our skateboard with an impressive 0.97g grip. While the crazy crossover is too aggressive for most everyday people to appreciate, the standard adaptive dampers provide a nice enough ride in softer conditions. And the thick-rimmed steering wheel conveys a respectable amount of feedback, with the steering never stopping us from enjoying the lower limits of its impressive capabilities.

BMW x3 fuel economy

The EPA estimates that the 2021 X3 M and X3 M with the Competition package will gain 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Those numbers are significantly lower than competitors like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio (with 17 and 23 mpg, respectively) and the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 SUV (16 and 22 mpg). However, the Bimmer performed better in the real world. On the 75-mph highway fuel economy route—part of our comprehensive test system—the X3 M exceeded the state highway rating by 7 mpg (26 mpg total). For comparison, we noted 20 mpg in the GLC63 SUV and 21 in the Stelvio QF, both of which missed the EPA highway ratings by 2 mpg.

Interior, comfort and cargo BMW x3

The X3 M shares its interior design and dimensions with the regular X3. However, the Sport Edition has more standard luxury features and a variety of exclusive details. The latter consists mainly of the “M” badges, the red driving mode buttons on the steering wheel and the strongly bolstered front seats. The Competition Package provides front chairs with more support. Throughout the cabin, attractive materials demonstrate BMW’s adherence to high aesthetics. Besides the crossover’s standard leather upholstery and select interior trim, BMW has introduced a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 14-way electric front seats, customizable ambient interior lighting,

Heated front seat cushions. Still not luxurious enough? Buyers can choose premium leather and a range of premium options, including a head-up display, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof and rear side window shades. There is plenty of room for passengers to fit everyone, as well as plenty of room for the luggage compartment. We were able to fit seven handbags behind the X3’s back seat and 20 backpacks with the seats folded. Buyers of the mechanically similar X4 M will give up some of that space for the heavily sloping rear end of this model.
