BMW x7 The 2021 BMW X7 is the brand’s biggest driver, delivering an undeniably refined aura and impressive levels of performance. Behind the bulging border-line kidney grille in the three-row SUV are three excellent engine options with a turbocharger. While the standard six-wheeler is a perfect fit with 335 horsepower ,

There is, however, a racy V-8 that produces either 523 or 612 horsepower. A higher-throughput engine would require the Alpina XB7, which costs nearly twice as much as the base model but provides the surplus expected by those who can afford it. However, the beauty of a large BMW is that each one has a comfortable and quiet cabin, as well as a plethora of luxury amenities and driver assistance technologies. Although its interior is smaller than its exterior suggests, and its rear seats are electric, the 2021 X7 earns top marks among high-end SUVs.

BMW x7 2021

For 2021, BMW has tweaked its X7 lineup by dropping the 456-hp xDrive50i and V8 – the M50i continues with 523-hp – and adding the 612-hp Alpina XB7. The latter is the first SUV presented by the BMW tuning specialist in the United States. The xDrive40i powertrain gets a 48-volt starter alternator, which, surprisingly, worsens EPA’s fuel economy ratings. City and highway ratings drop an average of 1 mpg. The X7 also adds a few new standard features, including compatibility with the much-anticipated Android Auto. A previously available Off-Road package, which brought a limited-slip rear differential and underbody protection, is no longer available.

Despite our fondness for the horsepower and superior acceleration of the twin-turbo V-8, we recommend the X7 xDrive40i. The six-cylinder powertrain we tested was silky smooth and very fast. It has a host of desirable standard features that include four-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, heated front seats, power tailgate,

And more. We’re also adding a vernasca leather upholstery option and a Premium package. The latter includes a head-up display, gesture controls, soft-closing doors, electric rear side window shades, and a Harman Kardon audio system. To help offset our complaint about the X7’s body roll when cornering, and to aid in its ability to maneuver at low and high speeds, we’re also choosing the Dynamic Handling package. Together with the improved M Sport brakes, the kit adds rear-wheel steering and an active stabilization system for the suspension.

  • Engine, transmission and performance

The entry-level X7 xDrive40i is powered by a 335-horsepower turbocharged inline-six, and the M50i has a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 that produces 523 horsepower. The Alpina XB7 has a specially modified version of the V-8 engine, which produces 612 horsepower. All three engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. We found the six-cylinder model to be torquey and quiet, but the V-8 was more charming and had more compelling acceleration.

But the standard air suspension with adaptive damping provides a smooth ride, especially in Comfort mode. Unfortunately, the X7 tends to bend in corners, which belies its sporty demeanor. The selectable Sport mode tightens things up a bit, with sharp effects intruding into the quiet interior drenched in the narrow sidewalls on the 21-inch wheels. Those who want the more powerful X7, and can afford the hefty asking price, will appreciate the Alpina XB7. It was the version that BMW had us drive around a tight racetrack that boasted impressive acceleration and showed surprising poise.

  • BMW x7 fuel economy

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the xDrive40i’s six-cylinder engine will gain up to 24 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city. However, those who want more grunt from the V-8-powered version will have to sacrifice some fuel efficiency. The M50i is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway, and we don’t currently have estimates for the Alpina model. We tested the xDrive40i on the 200-mile fuel-economy road and scored 28 mpg on the highway. The M50i also surpassed its government rating, achieving 24 mpg in our real-world highway test.

  • BMW x7 interior, comfort and cargo cabin

Borrowing partly from the smaller BMW X5 SUV and partly from the premium BMW 7 Series sedan, the rich interior of the X7 is well-appointed, technology-packed and spacious. Plenty of luxury features can be found inside, too, including heated front seats, panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable steering wheel and ambient interior lighting. However, we were annoyed by the slow movement of the second row powered captain’s chair when trying to let people in and out of the third row. Likewise, the reversing seats aren’t particularly roomy for adults during long drives. However, no one will complain about the X7’s ample internal storage space. While we were able to fit only three handbags behind the third row, we fit 33 bags in total with all the rear seats stowed.
