What’s new in the 2023 Toyota Prius  :

Toyota Prius 2023 begins a new fifth generation that has been completely redesigned and updated inside and out. Every Prius now rides on the next evolution of  Toyota’s TNGA-C platform  , making it smaller but tougher and more environmentally friendly with a wider stance and lower driving position. A new 194-hp hybrid engine with available all-wheel drive was added; Not only did the extra power make the Prius faster than many of its hybrid competitors, but its new performance also came at no cost to fuel economy. All-wheel-drive models get 196 horsepower thanks to the high-output magneto added inside the rear motor. A 220-hp Prius Prime Hybrid is also offered, but we’re reviewing that model separately.

Engine, transmission and performance:

The powertrain leads the Toyota Prius lineup. This is a 194-hp hybrid setup that uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid petrol engine, borrowed from the  Corolla Cross hybrid crossover  , mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard. For the   all-wheel-drive  Priuses , Toyota adds  a high-output permanent magnet electric motor to the rear axle, increasing total powertrain output to 196 horsepower, a 60 percent increase in power. Launching at 60 mph, which took last year’s Prius 10.5 seconds to reach, now takes just 7.1 seconds according to the front-wheel-drive Limited model. That’s faster than both  the Camry Hybrid  and  Elantra Hybrid. With larger front and rear brakes, the new Prius comes to a stop sooner than 70 mph.

fuel economy:

Despite its larger engine and more powerful powertrain, the Toyota Prius gains better fuel economy for the 2023 model year. The EPA estimates the Prius is good for 57 mpg city and 56 mpg highway for the front-wheel-drive model. That’s an improvement of 4 and 6 mpg over the last generation. The all-wheel-drive Prius scores marginally in fuel economy, with an estimated 53 mpg city and 54 mpg highway.

Interior, comfort and cargo:

While the new fifth-generation Prius takes on a new look, the interior has taken on a more restrained role, now featuring a traditional car cockpit. For the first time, the Prius now has a gauge cluster directly behind the steering wheel. The new design affects the interior with a 2.0-inch lower roofline, and to effect a lower center of gravity, front passengers also sit lower than before. Base models get a faux leather steering wheel, but upgrading to  the XLE  or higher trim  will   have heated front seats, more cup holders for rear passengers, and heated rear seats.

Information, entertainment and communication:

Both the base and higher-end models get larger screens than their predecessors. A new 8.0-inch infotainment screen comes standard on  LE  and  XLE models  , and Toyota has added a massive 12.3-inch touchscreen for the  Limited  (or as optional equipment for  the XLE ). This system includes ” Hey Toyota ” voice control and updates the infotainment system via the cloud with over-the-air updates. The Prius comes standard with driver-assist technology that many competitors only offer across option packages and higher trim levels. Among the most important safety features:

• Standard lane departure warning and lane keeping assist.
