Hyundai If you’re not among the throng of American car buyers queuing up to buy a new SUV, it’s comforting to know that there are still well-designed, affordable small sedans available for sale. Watch 2021 Hyundai Accent. With a starting price of about $16,000, the Accent is one of the least expensive new cars today, but Hyundai makes none of the three trims a penalty box.

Hyundai has decided to leave the Accent alone enough for 2021, with the only change to the available car color range. New Forge Gray replaces Urban Gray while Linen Beige has been discontinued.

It’s no secret that we are fans of manual transmission cars , and it is refreshing to find a good manual transmission that is standard on the Accent. Unfortunately, it’s only offered on the base SE level, which is stripped down and lacks many features that many car buyers would call essential. However ,

Hyundai Engine, Transmission and Performance

The Accent’s 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine produces 120 horsepower and drives the front wheels through either a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The four cylinders were new for 2020 and we didn’t test one of them, but we’d expect similar performance for the 2018 and 2019 models that deliver 130 horsepower.

Riding comfort clearly takes priority over skilful handling. However, the Accent feels lively, its petite body is easily thrown into corners, and it’s rewarding when pressed. Off-road is adequately leveled with the suspension, but harsh impacts will generate vibrations through the cabin.

Hyundai fuel economy

But small cars are expected to deliver good fuel economy numbers, and they do just that.

The new four-cylinder engine has improved fuel economy across the lineup: Manual transmission models are rated at 33 mpg combined and automatic models claim a combined 36 mpg rating.

On real-world highways, the 2018 Accent’s less efficient engine impressed us with a 41 mpg result when outfitted with a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Hyundai interior, comfort and cargo

The Accent’s emerging interior looks good, but it lacks the lighter Kia Rio or the rear-seat roominess of the Honda Fit — which provides nearly six inches of extra rear legroom.

But Accent has an interior devoid of frills, is uncomplicated and honest.

Both of our test cars had a black interior, which, despite its well-built, offers a dreary, business-like appearance. The optional beige interior creates a richer feel, with tan and black seats and similar dashboard and door panels.

Despite the sedan’s body and smaller cargo space with the use of the rear seats, the Accent had room for more hand luggage than the more practical Rio hatchback. In fact, with the rear seats folded, the Accent retained two cases of less than particularly roomy size.

Information, entertainment and communication

A 5.0-inch touchscreen radio is standard and offers USB and additional ports for connecting devices to the interface, but the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes on the SEL and Limited is higher tech. The larger screen also features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as well as a port. A second USB is located at the back of the center console.

Both systems offer Bluetooth phone connectivity, but the 7.0-inch touchscreen also comes with SiriusXM satellite radio.

Safety and driver assistance features

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Accent only a four-star safety rating, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick.

Warranty and maintenance coverage

At 10 years or 100,000 miles, Hyundai and sister company Kia have the best powertrain warranties available, and the Accent is the latest in Hyundai’s lineup to carry this class-leading coverage. The company now also offers free scheduled maintenance that outperforms major competitors such as Toyota.
