We also choose the V-6 over the standard four-cylinder turbocharged engine. This adds $1,400 to the price. And we might opt for the $1,900 all-wheel drive system. Shoppers planning to tow anything with an Atlas Cross Sport will want the V-6 Towing package, too.

Volkswagen Engine, Transmission & Performance

Volkswagen Of the two powertrains offered, we tested only the 3.6-liter V-6 with front-wheel drive. Delivering 7.5 seconds at 60 mph, it proved to be a bit faster than the similarly equipped three-row Atlas. Although we didn’t test a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 235 horsepower, this engine propelled the three-row VW to 60 in 7.1 seconds.

During our test drive, we found the Cross Sport lacked the sporty driving dynamics its rear end would suggest a fastback. The ride quality is less refined than expected as well, the wheels pounding every blemish and pothole they go through.

Navigation is optional, as is a reconfigurable gauge screen and SiriusXM satellite radio. VW’s Car-Net connectivity app enables remote start-up and analytics. In addition, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot allows passengers to stay connected to the Internet while on the go.

Safety and driver assistance features

So the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Atlas Cross Sport an overall crash-test rating of five stars, but it did not receive a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Volkswagen is equipping all Atlas Cross Sports with automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitoring, but if you want more advanced driver assistance features you’ll have to use one of the higher trim levels.
