Engine, Transmission and Performance 2021 Chevrolet Silverado
A range of engines—including one V-6 , a turbocharged four-cylinder, two V-8s, and a 3.0-liter Duramax six-cylinder diesel—means the Silverado 1500 is there for any job. Of the two eight-cylinder engines, the 6.2-liter 420 horsepower is the fastest, propelling the Silverado High Country to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. For comparison, the smaller 5.3-liter engine with 355 horsepower needed 6.1 seconds. The 310-hp 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine still provided good traction but needed 7.0 seconds to hit 60 mph. But we were impressed with the smoothness and quietness of the surgery engine. Every Silverado we’ve driven has felt smaller than its size suggests. The handling of the truck is surprisingly agile and the brake pedal provides firm, reassuring feedback. Towing and load capacity
With a maximum towing capacity of 13,300 pounds, the Silverado half-ton is a highly capable hauler. It beats the Ram 1500’s maximum drag rating by 550 pounds but lags the F-150 by 700. While Chevy’s higher intake rating requires a 6.2-liter V-8, the 5.3-liter version can still handle up to 11,500 pounds. Models with the V-6 can only tow up to 7,900 pounds, but the turbocharged four-cylinder and diesel engine can tow up to 9,500 and 9,600 pounds, respectively. The Chevy Pickup’s drivetrains don’t matter when it comes to payload, which ranges from 1,870 to 2,280 pounds.

Don’t expect the Silverado 1500 to save you money using the fuel pump, but some of its different powertrain options are more efficient than others. The optional diesel is the most economical, with EPA ratings of 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for the rear-wheel drive version. However, the addition of the all-wheel drive system drops that highway rating down to 26 mpg.
Which we were able to match on our 75-mph fuel economy route, which simulates real-world mpg and is part of our comprehensive test regimen. Meanwhile, the gas-turbocharged four-wheel drive with all-wheel drive is rated at up to 20 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. Our real-world testing revealed that it was more efficient than the smallest engine Silverado. The V-8 achieved 21 mpg while the 4 turbo achieved 18 mpg. The 6.2L V-8 has city/highway ratings of 16/21 mpg, and in our real-world highway testing it also proved to be impressively easy on fuel compared to the turbocharged four-wheel drive by saving 19 mpg. in the gallon.

The Silverado can be configured in a variety of ways, from a stripped-down work truck model to a High Country exterior trim. Base models offer only the basics, including manually adjustable front seats, manual locks and windows, and vinyl seats. Moving the scope unlocks all kinds of goodies, including the head-up display, ventilated front seats, and wireless smartphone charging.
It’s a pity that the truck’s cabin is dwarfed by the cheap plastic and design that looks a lot like it was carried over from the previous generation model. While the crew cabin has a massive back seat with plenty of headroom, we found the pillows there to be uncomfortable. However, this is a practical pickup truck that features clever storage troughs scattered throughout the cabin. While Chevy lacks the carbon-fibre-reinforced cargo bed that’s offered on the half-ton Sierra, it’s now available with a similar multifunction tailgate, dubbed Multi-Flex. In addition, Chevy’s different bed lengths will undoubtedly please traditionalists.

Every Silverado 1500 is equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a portable hotspot. Physical keys and buttons make interacting with the system painless, and we appreciated the quick screen responses to our touch inputs. Most trim levels can be equipped with a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen and more desirable features including a Bose audio system, built-in navigation, wireless charging and more.

Safety and driver assistance features
The 2021 Silverado 1500 received a four-star rating in crash testing from the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), but the latest version evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) was not named a top safety pick.
